Grateful Dead - Back To Back 1989 - #1: In 1989, the Grateful Dead’s traditional East Coast tour started about a month later than normal. The Dead were having a variety of issues with concert venues that fall. For example, one traditional tour stop, Madison Square Garden in NY, was under construction, forcing the band to re-locate to the Byrne Arena in New Jersey. When the band arrived in NJ in mid-October, they turned the last night of their stay on October 16,  Bob Weir’s 42nd birthday into one of the great shows of the decade, which was later officially released as the album, Nightfall Of Diamonds (I was lucky enough to be in the audience that night!). Another regular tour stop, Hampton VA, no longer wanted the band to play in their city due to crowd control issues, including having thousands of Dead Heads camping out days prior to the show. To circumvent the ban, The Dead booked themselves into the Hampton Arena under the pseudonym “Formerly The Warlocks”. They then played 2 shows for the ages, during which they brought back songs such as Death Don’t Have No Mercy and Attics of My Life, which hadn’t been played in almost 20 years! In addition, the Dead played another monster show in Miami on October 26, which was included in the box set, 30 Trips Around the Sun. Fall 1989 was the start of an almost 2 year run that provided the last great peak in the band's long strange trip. This soundboard recording captures the band at the next to last show of that historic year,  in Oakland on December 20, 1989, 28 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this back to back entry.
