On December 3 1968, the TV special, simply entitled Elvis, marked a significant turning point in the career of one Elvis Aaron Presley. After years of making B grade movies that had tarnished his image, Elvis made a spectacular return, showcasing his power, fire, charisma and sexual energy and reminding the world that he still was, The King. In early 1969, he began recording again in Memphis, sessions that yielded such classics as In the Ghetto and Suspicious Minds. By the middle of that year, Elvis was ready to return to live performing. At his first show on July 31 at the International Hotel in Las Vegas, he received a standing ovation from the sell out crowd of 2000 before he sang a single note! The performance was such a success that the next day, his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, negotiated a 5 year deal for Elvis headline at the International for 2 months a year, August and February, at an annual salary of $1 million.
