1973 - The Grateful Dead found themselves rebounding from personnel losses in 1973, emerging as an even stronger musical force in the process. Drummer Mickey Hart had left the band in late 1971, and would not return until late 1974. In early 1973, original keyboardist Ron "Pigpen" McKernan passed away at age 27, the first of the band's keyboard players to die tragically. The Dead's sound began a new evolution, with Bill Kreuztman handling the drums solo, while Keith and Donna Jean Godchaux added new musical elements to the mix. Keith's piano playing was more jazzy compared to Pigpen's bluesy sound, while Donna Jean helped fill out the band's harmonies. New tunes such as Jimmy Row, Let It Grow, Eyes Of The World, Loose Lucy and Wave That Flag (an early version of U.S. Blues) entered the band's repertoire. During the summer, the Dead would tour with both the Allman Brothers and The Band, including the historic concert at Watkins Glen in August which drew over 600,00 fans. By the fall and winter of 1973, the band was hitting on all cylinders, as evidenced the fact that a DOZEN shows from that period were officially released, featuring shows between September 8 and December 19. This soundboard recording captures the Dead in Tampa, on December 18, 1973, 4 dozen years ago today, and just 1 days before the show which was released as the first Dick's Picks back in 1993
