Rockpile - 1978-12-01 - Portland, OR (SBD)

1978 - For a band that released only one album, Seconds of Pleasure, Rockpile has an amazing legacy. What many folks don't know is that songs like Cruel to Be Kind, credited to Nick Lowe, and Girls Talk, credited to Dave Edmunds, were really recorded while they were working together as Rockpile! Because the two were on different labels, however, they could not credit the band! Moreover, it’s a bit strange, to say the least, that an English group that started as a new wave band also was known for its strong rockabilly influences. Unfortunately, Rockpile had a short lived career as tensions between Lowe and Edmunds split the band apart. Fortunately for me, I got to see them during their 1979 tour, on July 8, as the lead-in band for Blondie as part of the Summer Concert Series at Belmont Race Track. This soundboard recording captures them about 8 months prior to that, in Portland on December 1, 1978, 43 years ago today.
