What better post for a month featuring folk and country western music then a meeting between two legends from those respective genres. In February 1969, Bob Dylan went into the studio in Nashville to record his next studio album, which when released in April, would appropriately be titled, Nashville Skyline. The album marked a dramatic departure for Dylan, who up to this point was known for his groundbreaking, poetic folk/rock music. Nashville Skyline would be a country music album, and listeners would hear Dylan singing with a radically different voice, — a soft, affected country croon. On February 17 and 18, during the recording of Nashville Skyline, Johnny Cash, who was recording his own album in the studio next door, dropped in to join Dylan. While in the end only 1 song from their 2 days of collaboration – the incredible duet on Girl From North Country, one of my favorite tunes ever – made it onto Nashville Skyline, this was an historic meeting between 2 giants of the music world, which had significant future implications. Cash would wind up writing the liner notes for the album, for which he won a Grammy Award! Moreover, Dylan would appear on the first episode of The Johnny Cash Television show, playing 3 songs, including the aforementioned Girl From North Country. This soundboard captures every note of those historic studio sessions from 43 years ago today and tomorrow, as well as all 3 songs from the Johnny Cash show. This one is a must have!
