For this post, we fast forward 3 years to the day from our last entry to feature another country music legend, Willie Nelson. In 1975, after years with Atlantic records, Willie released his first album with Columbia, entitled Red Headed Stranger. The disc tells the tale of a fugitive on the run from the law after killing his wife and her lover. Despite Columbia's concerns about the album’s sparse musical arrangements (it featured just guitar, piano and drums), Red Headed Stranger certified multi-platinum, making Willie one of the most recognized artists in country music. His cover of Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain, released as a singe from album, became his first number one hit. This soundboard recording, from February 26, 1975, 37 years ago today, from Fort Worth, TX, captures Willie just before the release of Red Headed Stranger. The 2 shows from that night include several tunes from that disc, including Bandera, Remember Me, and Can I Sleep In Your Arms, though his soon to be chart topping single is absent from the set list. Even without Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain, these shows have plenty of classics, such as Whiskey River, Shotgun Willie, and Bloody Mary Morning, making them "must haves" for your collection.
