Another post that fits with our folk/country western theme this month. On February 5, 2008, Sheryl Crow released Detours, her 6th studio album, which marked a return to her folk roots. The album title was symbolic of the past few years of her life, which had been filled with unexpected events -- a bout with breast cancer, a breakup with longtime boyfriend Lance Armstrong and the adoption of a baby boy, Wyatt. Crow described the first single from the album, Shine Over Babylon, a folk rock anthem, as "in every way a desperate cry for understanding. Perhaps it is even a battle song in the face of fear." That description is hardly surprising given all that had transpired in her life. Just prior to the album’s release, she embarked on a publicity tour, beginning with an appearance on the Today show on February 1, an Internet concert on February 2 and then stints on the David Letterman Show, The View and Late Night With Conan O’Brien on February 4 and 5. Then, on February 6, 2008, 4 years ago today, she played her first concert featuring songs from the new album at Irving Plaza in New York City. This soundboard recording captures 10 songs from that show, including 3 tracks from the new album – God Bless This Mess, Shine Over Babylon, and Gasoline, the last of which is paired with a cover of the Stone’s Gimme Shelter!
