The Byrds – 1969-02-22 – Boston, MA (SBD)

In keeping with our theme this month, here's another from the The Byrds, a band influenced by the folk rock of Bob Dylan. New York had the Fillmore East; San Francisco, the Fillmore West; Philadelphia, the Electic Factory; and Boston, the Boston Tea Party. Taking its name from a major event in the American Revolution, this concert hall, which opened on January 20, 1967, showcased the psychedelic revolution taking place in rock music. The Boston Tea Party attracted bands such as The Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Pink Floyd, The Who, Santana and Led Zeppelin, just to name a few. The Byrds played the venue on February 22, 1969, 42 years ago today, featuring the relatively new line up of McGuinn, White, Parsons and York that had debuted late in 1968. (see the November 2 post for another concert by this line up). The band had just finished recording the album, Dr. Byrds and Mr. Hyde, which featured an unusual mix of country and psychedelic rock, hence the title of the disc. That album also featured McGuinn handling all the lead vocals. McGuinn, the leader and sole remaining original member of The Byrds felt that it would be too confusing for fans of  the band if the disc prominently featured the unfamiliar voices of the new members. As such, White, Parsons and York were relegated to backing vocal duties during the recording of the album. This soundboard recording of the Boston Tea Party show features several songs from Dr. Byrds and Mr. Hyde, including Nashville West, Drug Store Truck Driving Man, Old Blue, and This Wheel’s On Fire. Of course, the show also includes numerous Byrds classics, such as My Back Pages, Turn, Turn, Turn and Mr. Tambourine Man.
