While Elvis Costello started his career as an angry young punk rocker, his style has evolved and changed throughout his long career. In late 1996, Elvis Costello broke up his long time band The Attractions due to tensions between himself and bassist Bruce Thomas. He spent time over the next two years working in collaboration with Burt Bacharach. Costello had long been a fan of Bacharach, and even recorded his song, I'll Never Fall In love Again, for the 2nd Austin Powers movie. The duo released the album Painted From Memory in 1998, and even played a limited series of intimate live performances in support of the disc. After concluding the shows with Bacharach, Costello decided to continue to play a similar style of concert, and recruited long time keyboardist, Steve Nieve to accompany him on tour. The two embarked on The Lonely World Tour in early 1999. This soundboard captures Costello and Nieve on June 16, 1999, 15 years ago today, in Toronto. Download this one to hear Elvis play tunes from Painted From memory, as well as a host of earlier classics, though this time without the Attractions.

Elvis Costello/Bruce Springsteen Connections

• From 2008 to 2010, Costello hosted a television show called spectacle in which he would interview and play alongside other rock stars. Springsteen was his guest for the last 2 shows of the series.
• At the 45th Grammy Awards in 2003, Elvis and Bruce played London's Calling together in tribute to the late Joe Strummer of The Clash.
• Bruce and Elvis performed together on September 30, 1987 in Los Angeles, CA at the taping for the TV Special, Roy Orbison and Friends, A Black And White Night. 
• Elvis performed Bruce’s Brilliant Disguise for a 2003 Springsteen tribute album called Light of Day.
