Between 1970 and 1974, Grand Funk Railroad scored 8 consecutive top ten albums (7 studio, 1 live) on the Billboard charts, including We’re An American Band, which went to #2 in 1973. The also had two #1 singles - We’re An American Band and The Locomotion - as well as a #3 hit in Some Kind Of Wonderful. During the bands heyday, the general perception was that, although the critics hated them, audiences loved them. This soundboard recording, one of the very few around, captures Grand Funk on June 3, 1974, 4 decades ago today, in Los Angeles. I’ve always loved the tunes, We’re An American Band and I'm Your Captain (Closer to Home), so that’s more than enough reason to bring you some live Grand Funk!
Grand Funk/Bruce Springsteen Connections
- On June 13, 1970, Steel Mill, Springsteen’s band at the time, opened for Grand Funk at a Bricktown NJ’s Ocean Ice Palace.
- In March 1976, Springsteen and Carole King sang Loco-Motion together at a tribute concert honoring King’s songwriting. King had written the tune in 1962 along with Dave Goffen, Grand Funk, of course, took that tune to #1 in 1974.

thanks for the GFR Speedy, they never got the respect that they deserved , critics used to put them down all the time calling their style 3 cord rock n roll, but sometimes less is more when it comes to rock. They were pure energy and were the real deal totally unlike most of the phony computerized crap called music today. got to see the funk in Atlanta in 1970 amazing energy, great show, Speedy do you remember the survival album, the one with them on the cover dressed in furs and loincloths in front of a cave, just like cavemen. classic album cover, still have a copy, thanks again
My pleasure. I don't remember the survival album but I do remember GFR being all over the radio in my youth.
Survival came out in the spring of 71 it was their follow up to closer to home which came out in 70 the previous year and had I'm your captain on it. I was in my mid teens at the time , maybe you are a little younger which would explain not remembering album cover, anyway for a band that built their reputation as a great live act there are not many live bootlegs out there for some reason, Thanks again, great blog, also Go California Chrome, this is the day Speedy, will the 36 year triple crown drought end or will he be another in a long line to fail after winning the first two, lets hope he does it, would do wonders for the sport and bring it back to the limelight where it was in the 70s
