Today, Gaelic Park in the Bronx is part of Manhattan College, serving as the home for the school's soccer, lacrosse and softball games. In the early 1970s, however, the park was home for rock and roll. In the summer of 1971, Cat Stevens, Carly Simon, Kate Taylor, Johnathan Edwards, Black Sabbath and the Grateful Dead all palyeed shows at Gaelic Park, for just $5 a ticket. The following year brought the Allman Brothers, along with Deep Purple, Fleetwood Mac, Humble Pie, Yes and Blue Oyster Cult. This soundboard recording captures the Dead's concert in Gaelic Park on August 26, 1971. 46 years ago today. By the way, portions of the August 23 show were released on Road Trips Volume 1, #3 while the entire August 24 show was released on Dick's Picks 35, so you know the band was in top form around this time.

Speedy, you clairvoyant freak, you! I was just lamenting the loss of this show (had it on tape years ago) -- a great show when you're in the mood for really top-notch "song"-based Grateful Dead.
Doesn't hurt that it was my 15th birthday, either. If only I had known about this show at the time, I might've shlepped into the city from Long Island and braved the big, bad Bronx for a chance to see the Dead!
Alas, that chance didn't come for another 2 years - my first Dead show was Watkins Glen in 1973 - not too shabby, either, you must admit!

Hey Speedy, thanks for posting this fine show. I was there in the Bronx that evening. A concert that was originally scheduled for late July that instead occurred 45 years ago today - check out my ticket stub @ the GD Setlists site to prove the point. Pig was in really fine form that night as was Jerry. We were so happy to hear St. Stephen live one more time. Just a great night all around.
