Grateful Dead - 1970-03-08 - Phoenix, AZ (SBD)

For the Grateful Dead, 1970 was a year of transition. After the psychedelic intensity of 1969's live shows, captured in the album Live Dead, the band stunned fans and critics alike when they released Workingman's Dead in June 1970, followed by American Beauty in November. These were laid back, Americana-styled albums, featuring carefully crafted tunes, tight harmonies, and folk and country rhythms. In fact, legend has it that Jerry Garcia had made an arrangement that in return for his playing pedal steel guitar on Teach Your Children, CSNY would teach the members of the Grateful Dead how to sing harmony for those albums. The 2 discs would feature what would become some of the and's best known tunes - Sugar Magnolia, Uncle John's Band, Casey Jones, and Truckin, just to name a few. The band's live concerts also evolved during this period. Songs such Dark Star, St. Stephen, The Eleven, Caution (Do Not On The Tracks) and Cryptical Envelopment which had been at the center of 1969s psychedelic jams played a less prominent role in the band's set lists. In their place, the band built jams around tunes such as Truckin, Not Fade Away and Going Down The Road. This soundboard from St Louis captures the band during this transition phase on March 8, 1970, 41 years ago today.
