If the 1970s were the pinnacle of Elton John's commercial and artistic success, then the 1980s were the low point. While he still had several successful singles in that decade, such as I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues, Sad Songs and I Don't Wanna Go On with You Like That (all which made the Billboard Top 5, though none climbed all the way to number 1), not one of his albums could crack the top 10. His 1982 disc, Jump Up, perfectly symbolized the decade. On the one hand, two singles from the album, Blue Eyes, and Empty Garden (his tribute to the late John Lennon), both cracked the top 15 on the charts. On the other hand, lyricist Bernie Taupin called Jump Up "one of our worst albums," adding "it’s a terrible, awful, disposable album, but it had Empty Garden on it, so it's worth it for that one song." While Elton's studio work was a bit hit or miss, he could still put on as good as live show as anyone in the business. He toured extensively in support of Jump Up, playing 115 concerts in 1982 in Australia, Europe and North America. Most significantly, the tour reunited him with Davey Johnstone, Dee Murray and Nigel Olsson, the backing band that was with him on almost all his classic albums from the 1970s. This soundboard recording captures Elton during that tour, in Australia,on March 19, 1982, 37 years ago today.
