On January 12, 1969, Led Zeppelin released their self-titled debut
album, and rock and roll was never the same again. Over the next 10
years, Led Zep would become one of the immortal bands in rock history,
as their fusion of rock and the blues launched what would eventually
become known as heavy metal. Their first album featured songs that would
become staples of their live performances for years to come, including
Good Times Bad Times, Dazed and Confused, Black Mountain Side, and
Communication Breakdown. While at the time, the album received largely
negative reviews, today, critics are almost unanimous that the album was
one of the finest debut discs ever recorded. The Times in London ranked
it as the 41st greatest album of all time, while Rolling Stone magazine
placed it in the #29 position on its list of the top 500 best albums.
This soundboard recording captures the band on tour in support of it debut disc in Denmark
on March 17, 1969, a half century ago this very day.
