Grateful Dead - 1972-08-24 - Berkeley, CA (SBD)

Earlier this month we brought you a show from the Grateful Dead right just a few weeks before their appearance at Woodstock.  Today, we bring you one from about 3 years after the festival, from August 24, 1972, 47 years ago today in Berkeley.  By the middle of 1972, the Dead had evolved in a number of ways as a band.  Pigpen's role had been greatly reduced, as the keyboardist was dealing with the effects of alcohol abuse that would take his life the following year.  Keith and Donna Jean Godchaux had joined the band, giving the group a different sound. The pure psychedelia of 1969 had been augmented with a host of new tunes, from the albums Workingman's Dead and American Beauty, that had a folk rock flavor.  Jams that once emerged from Pigpen tunes such as Alligator or Hard To Handle now sprung from songs such as Trucking or Playing In The Band. This soundboard recording captures the Dead during that transitional time on the 3rd night of a 4 night stand at The Berkeley Community Theater.  The band was in peak form that summer - the 2 shows after this one have been officially released, one of which is the legendary Veneta show from August 27, 1972!
