Earlier this month we brought you a show from the Grateful Dead right just a few weeks before their appearance at Woodstock. Today, we bring you a soundboard recording from about 7 years after the festival, from August 4, 1976, 43 years ago today in Jersey City.. That year, the Dead returned to live performing after an 18 month layoff following their “farewell” concerts at Winterland in San Francisco in 1974. After an East Coast/Midwest tour in June, the band made their triumphant return to their home city with 6 shows at the Orpheum Theater from July 12 to 18. A few eeks after those Orpeheum shows, the Dead were back on the East Coast back for a concert at Roosevelt StadiumThat venue had opened in April 1937 as a minor league baseball stadium for the New York Giant’s International League franchise. The stadium was named for President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the architect of the New Deal, which helped fund numerous construction projects, such as the venue itself, in the aftermath of the Great Depression. In the 1970’s, John Scher of Monarch Entertainment and the Capital Theatre in Passaic, NJ, used the stadium for outdoor concerts. The Allman Brothers Band; James Brown; The Band; The Beach Boys; The Eagles; Eric Clapton; Pink Floyd; and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young all performed at Roosevelt Stadium. The most frequent performers were the Grateful Dead, who played 6 shows at the venue between 1972 and 1976.

At the time, I thought this was one of the worst Dead shows I had ever seen, or ever would see. What you don't get from recordings was how awful the sound was that day -- not nearly loud enough (Phil made a not-very-funny quip about it at one point) and horribly unbalanced -- there were times when all you could hear was drums, bass and Keith's near-comatose piano playing.
And way too many slow songs in the first set, played at a glacial pace. We were there with a non-Deadhead friend we had dragged along to his first show, and we were downright embarrassed.
Now, of course, with hindsight and the smoothing-out-the-rough-edges effect of time, I can honestly say I enjoy this show, though it will never make my top 5.
I only saw 2 Dead shows at Roosevelt Stadium, '74 and '76. They couldn't have been more different! But, rundown and shabby as it was, Roosevelt was a really fun place to see a show -- bigger than your typical indoor arena but so much smaller than most stadiums that it almost felt intimate.
