Simon & Garfunkel were invited to play Woodstock, but declined because they were working on their new album. That disc, Bridge Over Troubled Waters, released in January 1970, would be both their masterpiece and their swan song, as the duo broke up later that year. While they would have several reunion tours, they would never again release a studio disc.
A year prior to Woodstock, Simon & Garfunkel were riding a wave of critical and commercial success. The film, The Graduate, directed by Mike Nichols and starring Dustin Hoffman in his breakthrough role, featured the duo’s music, especially the now iconic tune, Mrs. Robinson. The soundtrack to the film went to number 1 on the Billboard charts, knocking The Beatles’ White Album out of the top spot! In March 1968, S&G released the album Bookends, which included the top 25 hits A Hazy Shade of Winter, At The Zoo and America, as well as a full version of the number 1 single Mrs. Robinson. Bookends, which also went to #1 on the charts, was a more complex album than some of the duo’s earlier work, with many of the songs dealing with the themes of old age and loss. Music from The Graduate soundtrack and Bookends was featured prominently in S&G’s set list when they went on tour that summer, as evidenced in this soundboard recording from the Hollywood Bowl from August 23, 1968, 51 years ago today.! This show was recorded by Al Kooper and was at one point intended for a live release, which unfortunately never materialized. Fortunately, you can download it right here and enjoy S&G at their best.

It's actually the weakest of all the Simon and Garfunkel shows that are out there, and it's no mystery why it wasn't released. Garfunkel especially sounds very off, they probably didn't have a great onstage mix, maybe he was stoned...who knows.....but it's the only show of theirs (that float around) where the harmonies aren't spot on. Though, they obviously are having themselves a good time! But it is in stark contrast to the concert recordings just a few months later in 1969 (and the ones from '66), which are spot on and tight...as opposed to this one, which is as sloppy as they ever sounded.
Looking forward to this, especially since I got my wife and I great seats to see Art Garfunkel in concert soon - thank speedy!

speedy: Thanks very much! This is easier to handle than the single-file .ape extract I have of the Grapefruit Productions version. Granted its lossless, but I don't like dealing with one file for an entire show.
