Van Morrison - 1995-08-05 - Helsingør, Denmark (FM)

In June 1995, Van Morrison released the album Days Like This, the 23rd studio album of his long storied career. It also happens to be one of my favorites, filled with wonderful tunes such as Perfect Fit, No Religion, In the Afternoon, Songwriter, and the title track. If you don’t own it and were turned off by some of the mixed reviews, take my word for it - it’s a worth adding to your collection. The disc climbed to #33 on the Billboard charts in the US and did even better in the UK, where it reached #5. It was also nominated for The Mercury Prize, an annual award for the best album from the United Kingdom and Ireland. Of course, in typical Van the Man fashion, in the midsts of touring in supprt of the album, he took time out to play a show with the Danish Radio Big Band, as captured in this FM broadcast from August 5, 1995, a quarter century ago today, that doesn't include a single song from his new disc!

Van Morrison/Jerry Garcia Connections

• Scour the internet for articles about Jerry Garcia (or the Grateful Dead) and Van Morrison and you'll come up empty, except for this funny story about how the Midnight Special TV show tried to get both Van the Man and the GD on the same show.
• Yet there's no doubt, Van the Man had an influence on both the Dead and Jerry. The Dead played Gloria on a handful of occasions in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, then in the late 1990s the tune became a fairly regular encore for the band. 
• The Jerry Garcia Band regularly covered 5 tunes from Van The Man, including And It Stoned Me, Tupelo Honey, Crazy Love, He Ain't Give You None and Bright Side of the Road. I was fortunate to see Jerry play the last 2 at an outstanding show at Madison Square Garden on November 15, 1991. which we've posted here at So Many Roads.
