In summer of 1987, the movie La Bamba was released, telling the tale of Ritchie Valens rise to stardom and tragic death, along with Buddy Holly, in a plane crash on February 3, 1959. Don McLean. Of course, immortalized that event as “the day the music died” in his classic tune, American Pie. During the movie’s closing credits, Lou Diamond Phillips, who played Valens in the movie, performed La Bamba, along with a then little known band Los Lobos. They would not be unknown for long. On June 30, 1987, their cover of La Bamba was released as a single and went to #1 on the Billboard charts. Then, just a week later, on July 7, Los Lobos released By Light of The Moon, an album of original material, whose theme focused on how and why the American dream eluded so many of the country’s working class. The disc received rave critical reviews, with Rolling Stone, All Music, and Robert Christgau, just to name 3, all singing its praises. Songs such as The Hardest Time; One Time, One Night; River of Fools; Tears Of God and The Mess We’re In, mixed rock, blues, country and tex-mex influences, with rhythms that could get you up dancing and lyrics that reached into your soul. If you don’t own it, you should. This excellent audience recording captures Los Lobos on August 8, 1987, 33 years ago today, in San Francisco.
Los Lobos/Jerry Garcia Connections
- Jerry Garcia was a huge fan of Los Lobos - in fact, a tape circulates of Jerry and Bob Weir playing with them in the parking lot before a show on July 2, 1989 in Foxboro. You can find video of that that impromptu performance here.
- Los Lobos served as the lead in band for the Grateful Dead for several shows in both 1988 and 1989, including the July 9 and 10, 1989 shows at Giants stadium that I attended.
- Los Lobos appeared on the 1991 album Deadicated, performing a cover of the Garcia/Hunter tune, Bertha. That tune, as well as West LA Fade Away became staples of Los Lobo’s concert set lists.
- Soon after Los Lobos took a cover of La Bamba to #1 on the charts in 1987, Jerry Garcia played the tune at several Grateful Dead concerts, including the September 18 show at Madison Square Garden that I attended.
- Los Lobos played at the Dear Jerry Tribute concert held in Columbia, Maryland on May 14, 2015.

@howlingwilf - thanks for stopping by! For me, Los Lobos joins John Hiatt and Marshall Crenshaw as 3 of the most criminally under rated and over looked bands of all time.
