Needless to say, after nearly 6 decades of playing live, it would appear that McCartney has seen it and done it all. Yet, when he took the stage on December 13, 2010, a decade ago today, the rock icon actually seemed in awe of his surroundings, the legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem. Sir Paul called the venue the “holy grail” of concert theaters, then saying “a long time ago, in Liverpool, I dreamt of this.” McCartney’s performance at the Apollo was sponsored by Sirius Satellite Radio to celebrate that the station had reached the 20 million subscriber mark. The audience was a mixture of Sirius subscribers who won tickets to the event (no tickets were sold to the general public) and celebrities, such as Keith Richards, Matt Damon, Alec Baldwin, Jerry Seinfeld, Jimmy Fallon, Kevin Bacon, Kyra Sedgwick, Tony Bennett, Howard Stern, Martha Stewart and Steven Van Zandt. For those lucky enough to be in attendance, the show was a rare opportunity to see Sir Paul in small intimate theater. The Apollo holds just 1475 guests, a far cry from the 60,000 plus seat stadium shows that the ex-Beatle more typically plays these days. This FM broadcast recording captures every moment of the concert, with Sir Paul in fine form, clearly inspired by the setting. In keeping with our theme, he plays Wonderful Christmas time, his original holiday tune. By the way,, accounts of the concert say that he stayed on stage for a while after the show ended, perhaps soaking in the historic moment. As he did, one person held up an Abbey Road album cover, and McCartney, making one more dream come true, signed it.
