In early December 1971, the Grateful Dead took up residence for 4 nights at the Felt Forum in New York City. The Felt Forum was a small theater, which seated between 3000 and 5000 people depending on the type of event, located underneath the main arena at Madison Square Garden, The Forum was most often used for boxing matches, though numerous rock bands also played the venue, including The Doors, Frank Zappa, Lou Reed and Santana. When Madison Square Garden was remodeled in 1990, the Felt Forum became the Paramount, and later was known as The Theater at MSG. The first Grateful Dead show I ever had on cassette tape was from December 5, 1971 at the Felt Forum, the 2nd show of that 4 night stand that had been broadcast on WNEW-FM. Today we have the opening night of that run, a soundboard recording from December 4, 1971, 49 years ago today! In keeping with our theme this month, the set features their cover's Chuck Berry's Run Rudolph Run, about the only holiday song they ever performed.

First of all, this is a great site from a long time lurker. Had to comment because this was my first Dead tape from that WNEW show and still one of my favorites. The New Riders set was good too. Thanks for all you do!

I got this for Pigpen singing Run Run Rudolph but it's a great show - I love the Fall '71 stuff. Okay I love all Dead but brand new Keith just before Donna is pretty cool!
