1981 - Earlier this month we brought you The Police in 1984 at the height of the commercial and critical success.  Today, we step back a few years to 1981 as the band was trying to make the leap from new wave phenomenon to rock stardom. Between July 7 and August 7, 1980, The Police recorded their 3rd album, Zenyatta Moondatta, in a whirlwind series of sessions in The Netherlands. They had hoped to use Surrey Sound Studios in the UK as they had for their first 2 albums, but could not for tax reasons. The band was under intense pressure to finish the disc as they were embarking on a world tour in August. Drummer Stewart Copeland was quoted as saying "We had bitten off more than we could chew. ...we finished the album at 4 a.m. on the day we were starting our next world tour. We went to bed for a few hours and then traveled down to Belgium for the first gig. It was cutting it very fine." The album would be released in October, just about the time the band started the first North American leg of the tour. Although the band wasn't entirely happy with the album, Zenyatta Moondatta would climb to #5 on the Billboard charts in the US and reach the top spot in the UK. The Police stayed on the road in support of the disc until February 26, playing a total of 96 shows on 5 continents. This soundboard recording captures the band near the very end of the tour, on February 23, 1981, 3 dozen years ago this very day, in New Zealand.
