1979s - #5: On August 15, 1976, I saw Elton John live at Madison Square Garden during his Louder Than The Concorde Tour, an amazing night of music that served as the inspiration for my self published Book, Ten Rules Of The Road I Learned at My First Concert (buy it here). A year earlier, Elton played a series of shows in the Pacific Northwest and Mountain time zones in the US, a run aptly named West of The Rockies, referring both to the geography of the tour and his most recent album, Rock Of The Westies! This excellent audience recording (from the archives of legendary taper Mike Millard) captures Elton's 31 song marathon in San Diego on September 29, 1975, 46 years ago today. As this show was opening night of the tour, Elton tests out a a host of tunes, many of which would not appear in later shows or in the Louder Than The Concorde Set list, such as Street Kids, Have Mercy On The Criminal and Better Off Dead. The show also features what Elton calls the first ever performance of “Harmony.” The show captures Elton at the height of both his artistic and commercial success.
