1970s - #3: In August 1978, Bruce headlined the Worlds Greatest Arena, Madison Square Garden, for the first time, a 3 night sold out run. (I was there but that’s a story for another post). By the way, Bruce had appeared at MSG in June 1973, as the lead in band for Chicago! Despite making the leap to 20,000 seat arenas, Bruce was still at the point in his career where he could also play smaller concert halls. That’s just what he did on September 17, 1978, 32 years ago today, when he nearly brought down the house at the Palladium, a 3000 seat theater on 14th Street in NY. Opening with Badlands from his recently released album, Darkness on The Edge of Town, Bruce blazed through 25 songs in a 2 ½ hour crescendo of rock and roll. While the set list is heavy on tunes from Darkness and Born To Run, it also features previews of The River, in Independence Day and Point Blank, early classics such as Rosalita, Spirits in The Night, Incident on 57th Street and Kitty’s Back, and rare gems such as Because The Night and Fire. This soundboard captures the entire show, with the exception of the final encore, Quarter To Three. You’ll want this one for your collection, as within a few years, Bruce graduated to stadium size shows, making this the last national tour where he still played venues such as the Palladium.
