1970s - #6: In 1976, the Grateful Dead made their triumphant return to live performing after a hiatus that lasted from October 1974, after their 5 farewell shows at Winterland, to June 1976. Their return to the stage found the band playing with a renewed energy, and 1976 would set the stage for the following year, one of the most legendary in the band's 30 year long strange trip. Th 1976 shows found the band experimenting with unique set lists,, and this soundboard recording from Columbus on September 30, 1976, 45 years ago today, is a great example. The Dead open with the Music Never Stops, a tune usually found closing the first set. They bring Set 1 to an end with Scarlet Begonias, a traditional second set tune. The Lazy Lightning > Supplication pairing, often found in set 1, actually opens set 2 in this show. And Morning Dew as an encore is an inspired and unusual choice! By the way, the jam in the middle of set 2, that starts and ends with St. Stephen, is a taste of what was to come in 1977!
