1980s - #2: In August 1981, the Pretenders released their 2nd album simply and appropriately titled, Pretenders II. The disc went to #10 on the Billboard charts and featured such tunes as Message Of Love, Talk Of The Town and The Adulteress. It would be the last album recorded by the original Pretenders line up, as drug overdoes claimed the lives guitarist James Honeyman-Scott and bassist Pete Farndon over the next 2 years. This FM broadcast captures The Pretenders on tour in support of their 2nd album, in Santa Monica on September 4, 1981, 4 decades ago today. Note - some sources list the date as September 1.

Oh my, what an excellent show by the Pretenders. Had this one back in the day on a cassette recorded off the radio broadcast. The original lineup of the band was its best, although it was pretty short-lived.
Outstanding here is the toward-the-end performance of 'Up The Neck'. This is the best version of it played live among the numerous early-era concert tapes circulating, Honeyman-Scott's guitar just keeps building to a frenetic end, and then Chrissie Hynde's wailing voice kicks in at the finish. Thanks Speedy for sharing what is, in my book, a 'peak Pretenders' concert!
