1990s - #2: Incredibly in 1998, less than a dozen years after their commercial breakthrough with the album By The Light Of The Moon and their cover of La Bamba, Los Lobos was dropped by Warner records. The band by the way, had not been resting on their laurels. In 1995, they released the critically acclaimed children's album, Papa's Dream. That same year, Los Lobos won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance for the tune Mariachi Suite. Unfortunately, mixed reviews for the album Colossal Head, released in 1996, led to their dismissal by Warner. While working on a new record deal, Los Lobos did what they do best - go out on the road and play live. This soundboard recording captures the band on September 10, 1998, 23 years ago today at Mountain Winery in Saratoga CA. A quick side note - Mountain Winery was originally the Paul Mason Winery. If you’re as old as I am, you’ll remember Paul Masson Wines, and their slogan, “we shall sell no wine before its time.” That line was delivered in ultra serious tones by Orson Welles, who was eventually fired from that job when he admitted on talk show that he never drank Paul Masson wine.
