On July 7, 1981, I saw Carlos Santana in concert for the first time. I was about a month removed from college graduation, and enjoying a summer off before starting business school in the fall. My buddies and I were going to see Carlos at a new outdoor concert venue that John Scher had opened, the South Mountain Arena in West Orange NJ. When we arrived, we found out that it wasn’t quite an Arena. In fact, it wasn’t quite an Amphitheater or Hall or an Arts Center or anything quite so fancy. It was…. THE SIDE OF A HILL. Yep, , Mr. Scher, who, as mentioned in my prior post, above all knew how to make a buck, rented space in a large park, put a stage at the bottom of a hill, put up fences to keep out anyone without a ticket, and created a concert venue. I guess it’s a little late for me to complain, especially since I bought to tickets to several other shows at South Mountain that summer. All issues with the venue were forgotten once Carlos hit the stage. He played a blistering set, featuring songs from his latest album Zebop, as well as a host of classics. We had gone hoping that Carlos would play Open Invitation, and he delivered. You, see, when I was in college, a cover band called Yasgur’s Farm usually played Open Invitation to close their shows, which in a beer induced haze, probably sounded way better than it really was. In any event, that sort of became a theme song for my group of friends. Finally hearing Carlos play it live was one of the highlights of my concert “career”. I would get to see Carlos again in 1986 as part of the Crack Down concerts at Madison Square Garden,
In any event. this soundboard recording predates both my Santana shows, taking place on November 17, 1978, 45 years ago today.

Thanks for Carlos Speedy, the man is a living legend back when mainstream media ,radio, tv ecc promoted great talent and allowed for artists like him and others to become the icons that they became. Which brings me to my point, Have you ever heard of an artist named Garrett Anderson and his band? recently downloaded a show off of a blog called internet archives and was blown away, He and his band are great, Sound like a combination of the dead,with blues, jazz and southern rock thrown in for good measure. Not much about him on the web, Know that he and his band play out of Baltimore, has many good quality shows posted on that blog as if he wants people to download his shows. Know that there has been much discussion lately about how the media only promotes the Mileys, Beibers, Carrie Underwoods, Hip Hop garbage ecc while real talented artists and bands struggle to find an audience and this is another example. Put him in the catagory of Warren Hanes, AJ Croce ,Neko Case, Feist,ecc as artists who are great but unfortunatly underexposed thanks to the powers that be who promote artists today, in fact that blog has many artists that sound great that ive never heard of. Speedy, have you ever heard of Garrett Anderson and that blog / also why do you feel the media dosent properly promote talented artists but gives way too much attention to the no talents who do nothing but prance around the stage in skimpy outfits like idiots, Please give your feedback, thanks so much
Also ,i just learned that AJ Croce Jims son played a small club in my town about a month ago, i found out from someone who works in a music store a month after the fact, there was nothing in the paper about it either before or after the show, Contrast that to a coupe of years ago when Miley Cyrus was here performing her stage porn tongue wagging act, it was on the front page with local tv reporters fawning all over her for interviews . Cant beiieve music has come to this
Thanks Speedy, love Carlos, ever hear of an artist named Garrett Anderson has a killer band, sort of reminds me of the dead with a little blues and southern rock thrown in , apparently another of those obscure talents that cant get much airplay similur to Warren Hanes AJ Croce ecc.discovered him on another blog of all things, Wonder how these people earn any money with such little exposure
have not hear of Gareet Anderson. I'l have to look him up and see what I can find

Thanks so much for this one! I've actually seen Santana 9 times. The first 2 times were when I was living in the Bay Area, starting in 1982. He opening for Journey along with Toto, Gamma and the Tubes. Those big outdoor Day On The Green concerts were huge! The rest of the times I've seen him have all been while living here in Las Vegas. I've been a bit spoiled with his Vegas residencies. Even though he's getting up there in age, he and his band never disappoint!
