Tom Petty was yet another superstar who played Live Aid as part of the effort to raise funds to end end the famine in Africa. He has also been a long time supporter of Hungerthon, donating signed memorabilia to the annual charity auctions.
Today's post goes back to Petty's early days, long before he had the star power to help raise funds for a worthwhile cause. While Petty & the Heartbreakers released their first album in November 1976, it received little or no attention in the US. In fact it didn't chart until 1978, hitting #55 on the Billboard Top 200. So, when the band played My Father’s Place on November 29, 1977, 39 years ago today, as captured in this FM broadcast, they were still looking for their big break. That would come shortly, when a re-release of the single Breakdown cracked the Billboard top 40 in early 1978.
