Grateful Dead - 1973-11-20 - Denver, CO (SBD)

As mentioned in our Jerry Garcia post earlier this month, the Grateful Dead have been long time supporters of the effort to end hunger in America. The band established its our charitable organization in 1983, the Rex Foundation, to help raise money "to help secure a healthy environment, promote individuality in the arts, provide support to critical and necessary social services, assist others less fortunate than ourselves, protect the rights of indigenous people and ensure their cultural survival, build a stronger community, and educate children and adults everywhere." In keeping with our November theme, one of the recipients of grant money from the Rex Foundation was the Greater Philadelphia Food Band. Long before the Rex Foundation existed, members of the Dead - Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh and Mickey Hart - lent their support to Hunger Week by performing an acoustic benefit concert at Loyola College in Chicago on October 17, 1978. Even 2 decades after Garcia's death, he and his former band mates continue to make ending world hunger a priority. Bob Weir will perform at the “Imagine There’s No Hunger” benefit concert at the Hard Rock in San Francisco, on December 18th. 2016, a n event supported by WhyHunger and the Jerry Garcia Foundation.  Jerry's foundation, as ell as those established by Phil and Bob, have also been contributors to the fight against hunger.  For example, Phil's Unbroken Chain foundation has provided support to Homeward Bound and the St. Vincent de Paul Society both of which seek to help feed the homeless and hungry.  Bob's Furthur Foundation supports numerous organizations that donate food to the hungry such as Table To Table & Food Shift.  The 1960s spirit of using music to produce social change still lives on through the Grateful Dead and the band's legacy.

In honor of the Dead's efforts, we're bringing you 2 shows from the band's 1973 Winter tour, starting with this soundboard recording from Denver on November 20, 1973, 43 years ago today.  To say this was a peak time for the Dead would be an understatement. The band played 20 shows between November 1 and December 19 1973. Of those,  half have been officially released!  To borrow from the song the Muisc never Stops, it was a time "when the band Lord they're setting us on fire."
