U2, and especially its leader Bono, have been among the most active rock artists when it comes to fighting world hunger, poverty and social injustice. U2's appearance at Live Aid not only supported the efforts to relieve the famine in Africa, but also put the band on the map as a force in the music world and champions of social change. Bono, of course, snag on Do You Know Its Christmas, the charity single that helped spawn Live Aid. U2 also played at Live 8 in 2005, helping to bring attention to the issues of global poverty. Bono continues to be active in these areas to this very day, having just met this past summer with the head of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) as part of the continuing effort to raise awareness and gain support to address the issue of hunger across the globe.
