Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady started working together in 1965, as members of the Jefferson Airplane. In 1969, while still with the Airplane, Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady they launched a side project called Hot Tuna, an acoustic duo that focused on their blues roots. In 1970, Hot Tuna would branch out to play electric sets, featuring long improvisational jams, much like the Grateful Dead. In late 1970, Jorma and Jack joined he Dead on stage for 2 shows, on November 11 and November 20. Of course, given that Hot Tuna was born of the Jefferson Airplane, Jorma & Jack’s connections to the Dead go far beyond 2 live appearances, as well discuss in a post a few days from now. This soundboard recording captures Hot Tuna just 2 years ago today, in Arrington VA on September 11, 2015 playing a tribute to the Airplane!
