Between 1967 and 1969, the Byrds and the Grateful Dead were both part of the line ups for 5 different rock festivals - Monterrey Pop in June 1967, Newport Pop in August 1968, Vancouver Pop and New Orleans Pop in August 1969 and Rock Jubilee in October 1969. Both groups drew on an eclectic set of influences in both their studio work and live performances, including folk, country, bluegrass, psychedelic, and even jazz. The two groups are renowned for their covers of Bob Dylan material. The Byrds turned tunes such as Mr. Tambourine Man, My Back Pages and All I Really Want Do into chart hits, while the Dead made songs such as All Along The Watchtower, Quinn The Eskimo and Knockin on Heaven’s Tour integral components of their live shows. The two bands also share several personal connections. David Crosby and J  erry Garcia struck up close friendship sharing a love of both music, and unfortunately, drugs. Crosby even briefly fronted a band called David & The Dorks which featured Garcia, Phil Lesh and Mickey Hart of the Dead. Garcia also knew Clarence White of The Byrds from White's days with the Kentucky Colonels, a 1960’s bluegrass band. Speaking of Clarence, this soundboard recording from September 5, 1971, 46 years ago today, features the McGuinn/White/Parsons/Battin line up for The Byrds, the quartet that was not only the group’s longest tenured configuration but also the one which established the band’s reputation as dynamic live performers.
