Rolling Stones - 1970-09-22 - Paris, France (FM)

As I did my research for this post, I was surprised by the number of connections between the Rolling Stones and The Grateful Dead. Two Rolling Stones songs occasionally found their way into the Dead’s live shows, The Last Time and Satisfaction. Both bands also performed covers of Not Fade Away, Little Red Rooster and It’s All Over Now. The Dead and The Stones were both involved in the concert turned debacle at Altmont on December 6, 1969, where Meredith Hunter was stabbed to death by the Hell’s Angels. The Stones had hired the Angels to work with security at the recommendation of the Dead, who had used the motorcycle gang in that capacity on numerous occasions with no issues. In the wake of Altamont, Sam Culter, who had managed the Stones up to that point, was abandoned by Jagger and Richards. He turned to the Grateful Dead for help, and eventually became their manager for several years in the early 1970s. Culter coordinated the 1970 Festival Express, the Europe 72 tour, as well as the Dead’s appearance at another, far more successful festival, Watkins Glen in 1973. By the way, one Rolling Stone actually appeared live with the Grateful Dead! Mick Taylor, the Stone's lead guitarist from 1969 to 1974, sat in with The Dead at their Rain Forest Benefit Concert at Madison Square Garden on September 24, 1988.  This FM broadcast captures the Stones in Paris on September 22, 1970, 47 years ago today, with the aforementioned Mr. Taylor on guitar!
