The man nicknamed The King Of The Blues, who called his guitar Lucille, is regarded as one of the greatest guitarists of all time, whatever source you use. The 2003 Rolling Stone list of the greatest guitarists ranked him at #3 while the 2001 list had him at #6. To put that in perspective, only 7 men cracked the to 10 on both lists - King, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Keith Richards, Chuck Berry and Duane Allman. This soundboard captures BB on June 19, 1971, 4 dozen years ago today at the legendary Fillmore East in New York.  Jus t8 days later, the Allman Brothers would play the last concert ever at the venue!

BB King/Allman Brothers Connections

• Prior to forming the Allman Brothers, Duane & Greg had a band called Hourglass, who played a medley of BB King songs - Sweet Little Angel, It's My Own Fault and How Blue Can You Get?.
• BB King, was also at the concert featuring Otis Redding (see our June 4 post) that inspired Greg and Duane to start a band!
• When the Allman Brothers first show at The Fillmore East. leading in for Blood Sweat & Tears didn't go over well with the crowd, promoter Bill Graham,  who thought the band was phenomenal, asked them what musicians they liked - The Allmans answered BB King and The Grateful Dead. As a result, several weeks later, on January 15, 1970, Graham had the Allmans open for BB King at the Fillmore West.
