In the wake of Jerry Garcia's passing in 1995, the Grateful Dead disbanded rather than continue playing as a unit without their long time guitarist and spiritual leader. Over time, they reversed that decision, reforming to play in various guises such as The Other Ones, The Dead and most recently, Furthur. Furthur has always been part of the band's vocabulary, dating back to the the 1960's when it was name of the bus used by Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters as part of the Electric Kool Aid Acid tests, The Grateful Dead, of course, were the house band for those events! The Dead's tune The Other One references Furthur in the line "Captain Neal at The Wheel, of the bus to never never land". So, it's not surprising then that the first musical initiative after Jerry’s death by former members of the Dead was dubbed "The Furthur Festival". The Furthur Festival, which ran during the summers from 1996 to 1998, was a collection of bands with links to Dead, such as Bob Weir's Ratdog, Mickey Hart's Mystery Box, Hot Tuna, Los Lobos and former GD keyboardist, Bruce Hornsby, just to name a few. This soundboard recording captures Ratdog's set set at the Further Festival in Scranton on June 30, 1997, 22 years ago today.

Bob Weir/Allman Brothers Connections

• In a 2015 interview, Greg Allman said “Bobby Weir is one of my favorite people on this earth. Yes, I think it would be wonderful if we all merged and came up with something brand-new. Not necessarily Grateful Dead songs and Allman Brothers songs, but all-new material,” Gregg said. 
• In the summers of 2007 and 2008, The Allman Brothers and Ratdog played several dates together.
• On March 28, 2009, during the Allman's 40th anniversary run at the Beacon, Bob Weir and Phil Lesh sat in for several tunes.
• Bob Weir has played at Warren Haynes's Christmas Jam in 2002 and 2016.
