Bob Dylan - 1995-06-21 - Philadelphia PA (SBD)

On June 21, 1995, Bob Dylan's Never Ending Tour took him to Philadelphia for the first of 2 shows, as captured in this soundboard recording. The show was part of an east coast swing that also included concerts in Vermont, Boston, East Rutherford and Washington DC. At the last 2 stops, he opened for the Grateful Dead on what would proved to be their final tour before Jerry Garcia's passing.. At just about the same time Dylan launched this tour, Columbia Records released his MTV Unplugged album. Dylan made his appearance on that show at Sony Music Studios in New York on November 17 and 18, 1994. Originally, Dylan had wanted to do a set of traditional folk songs, however, at MTV's request, he instead performed mostly classics from his early albums. The result was that the album gave Dylan his best sales in years, as it reached #23 on the Billboard charts in the US, while climbing all the way to #10 in the UK.

Bob Dylan/Allman Brothers Connections

• In the last decade of their career, the Allman Brothers added covers of Dylan’s Blind Willie McTell and Don’t Think Twice Its Alright to their live set lists. 
• Of course, one of the Allman’s signature tunes is their cover of Statesboro Blues, which was written by the one and only Blind Willie McTell who is the subject of the Dylan’s tune referenced above. 
• The Allmans appeared at Watkins Glen with The Band, who of course, started their career as Dylan’s back up band. 
• Allman Brothers guitarist Derek Trucks was only 12 years old when Dylan invited him on stage to play guitar on Highway 61 Revisited. 
• Perhaps the strangest connection between Dylan and the Allman Brothers is the photo shared on our Paul McCartney post earlier this month that features Dylan, Macca and Greg Allman at 1975 party thrown by Rod Stewart.
