Well, as the Summer Of Love began in June 1967, Neil Young was supposed to be on stage at Monterey Pop, playing with Buffalo Springfield. But Neil skipped the counter culture's celebration of peace and love because he was angry with Stephen Stills. As would be the case throughout their 50 plus year musical and personal relationship, Neil and Stephen were feuding. And whenever that happened, Neil would usually just leave, such as in 1970 and 1974 at the end of CSNY Tours, in 1976 during the Stills Young Band tour, and so on and so on. Ironically, that seems to be the one thing that has remained consistent over Neil Young’s 50 plus year musical career - you (and his bandmates) never seem to know what he might do next. In early 2003, 25 years after the Summer OF Love, Neil played a series of solo acoustic shows in Europe, (go here for one of those shows) featuring his latest album Greendale. Greendale is a concept album that loosely tells the tale of the murder of a police officer and its effect on 3 generations of a family. When he returned to the US in June, he teamed up with Crazy Horse for an electric version of that album. The concerts included a full cast stage show, complete with scenery, backgrounds and special effects, enacting the saga of the Green Family. At the conclusion of Greendale, Neil and Crazy Horse returned for a 3 to 5 song encore that included incendiary versions of tunes such as Cinnamon Girl and Down By The River. Neil went from minimum volume and accompaniment to maximum almost overnight. On June 13, 2003, a 19 years ago today, Neil and Crazy Horse took a brief break from the Greendale tour to headline the Bonaroo Music Festival. They skipped the stage show and most of the tunes from Greendale, but brought the volume and intensity that made Neil the “Godfather of Grunge”.
