While by 1967, Phil Lesh was an integral part of the Grateful Dead, he was actually the final founding member of the band. He was talked into joining the band and playing bass while they were still The Warlocks in late 1964, just a few months before changing their name! Lesh had never played bass before, but his classical training enabled him to take on the new challenge. Moreover, since he had no preconceived notions of how to play the bass, enabling him to experiment and revolutionize the the instrument's role. Rather than simply serve as part of the rhythm section, Lesh used the bass to help lead the psychedelic jams that characterized the band's sound. While Phil took an occasional vocal during Dead concerts, he hardly seemed like the type to front a band. Yet, once the Dead officially disbanded in 1995 after Jerry Garcia's death, he did exactly that. In 1998, he began playing under the moniker Phil Lesh and Friends. Over the years, the friends have included a virtual who’s who of rock and roll, including Jorma Kaukonen, Trey Anastasio, John Molo, Warren Haynes, Jimmy Herring, Joan Osborne, Derek Trucks, and Susan Tedeschi, just to name a few. This sounboard recording captures the 2005 version of Phil & Friends in Atlanta on June 25, 2005, 15 years ago today.  By the way, we'll have more on Phil and the Dead's role in 1967 in a post later this month!
