Rolling Stones - 1981-09-25 - Philadelphia, PA (SBD)
As discussed in earlier posts on this blog, the Rolling Stones returned to the top of the rock world in 1978 with the release of Some Girls, one of the finest albums of their career. They continued that momentum with their 2 follow up albums, Emotional Rescue in 1980 and Tattoo You in 1981. Both hit number 1 on the Billboard charts, the last 2 Stones albums to do so. Tattoo You also spawned the last Stones single to reach as high as number 2 on the charts, the upbeat, infectious rocker Start Me Up. Both album and single were released in August 1981, just weeks before the Stones launched a massive worldwide tour. That tour, when it was done, would gross over $50 million with an average ticket price of $16. It also featured one of the first examples of corporate sponsorship for rock tours, as Jovan fragrances paid $1 million for the rights to put their name on the tickets. The Stones sold many of those tickets by mail order to hinder scalpers. They received over 4 million ticket requests for the opening two shows of the tour at RFK Stadium in Philadelphia. I was at this show, which was quite good, despite the Stones' reputation for still being in "rehearsal mode" at the beginning of each tour. Journey (tepid) and George Thorogood (enthusiastically received) opened. The stage set was amazing, with Mick constantly prowling from wing to wing. I remember a thrilling set from start to finish, and much appreciate your continuing efforts to allow each of us to recapture a little part of our past (either as it was or as it might have been.) Thanks!
