David Bowie was part of the 1996 Rock Hall Of Fame class, which also included Gladys Knight and the Pips, Jefferson Airplane, Little Willie John, Pink Floyd, Pete Seeger, The Shirelles and The Velvet Underground. David Byrne of the Talking Heads presented Bowie for induction. Bowie, wasn’t in the building, however, as he was in Helsinki, Finland, touring in support of his album, Outside. Madonna accepted on his behalf, and Marianne Faithful performed Rebel Rebel.
In 1974, David Bowie moved to the US, initially living in New York before finally settling in Los Angeles. His physical move across the ocean was paralleled by a transition in his musical persona. Bowie left behind the character of Ziggy, the glam rock leader of the Spiders From Mars, to take on the role of Halloween Jack, a real “cool cat" who lived in the post-apocalyptic Hunger City. Bowie combined his vision of the apocalypse with his take on George Orwell’s classic novel 1984 in producing the album Diamond Dogs, which he released in early 1974. In some ways, the album with its vision of a stripped down world filled with urban chaos, all propelled by a raw, almost amateurish guitar sound, anticipated punk revolution of the late 1970s. The title track and the tune Rebel Rebel were both released as singles, and drove the album to the top spot in the UK and to number 5 in US. When Bowie went on tour in support of the album, another transformation was quickly evident. His glam rock look was gone, replaced by pasty and emaciated Bowie, the result of his growing addiction to cocaine. I was 16 years old. I got two tickets and asked a girl who was my lab partner in biology to go to this show. I knew Bowie from records but had not been to to many concerts. When we got there the gay Hollywood crowd was out in full force. Trasvestites and crossdressers, etc. people dressed as Ziggy Stardust, and men walking their women with diamond studded colars on leashes due to the Diamond Dogs album. The show itself was a mind blower with an amazing stage set up including skyskrapers and this giant diamond that cracked open and the insife was lined with blicklight flouresent tubes and inside was Bowie. They had a dance troop that acted out many of the songs, including Big Brother where they all bowed down to Bowie as if he were their ruler. During Space Oddity Bowie appeared at the top of a skyscraper and then was trasported out above the crowd on a hydraulic crane that was hidden due to the lighting so it looked like he was hovering above the crowd as he sang. After that experience I was hooked on going to concerts. AZ Jones
