Today, as he triumphantly takes his Wrecking Ball tour around the world, Bruce Springsteen remains one of rock’s biggest stars, a hall of famer who still has plenty of gas left in the tank. Back in 1971, however, Springsteen was a nobody. When he played as part of the Guggenheim Memorial Concert Series in Damrosch Park at Lincoln Center on July 23, 1971, 4 dozen years ago today, the headline act was The Richard Goldman Band, a classical orchestra noted for its creative use of wind and brass instruments. Springsteen was one of several unnamed under card acts, each limited to a one hour performing slot. The fact that Bruce’s mid-1971 lineup included horns may have been the reason he got this particular booking. Although this was an outdoor event, Bruce and the band performed inside the Guggenheim Band Shell. The superb acoustics of that shell, a well preserved tape source, and a highly disciplined and inspired performance by Bruce and the band all combine to deliver an extraordinary soundboard recording.
