The year 1974 marked EC's triumphant return to the top of the rock world. After playing at the Rainbow Concert in January 1973, Clapton worked to kick his heroin addiction and finally was united with long time love Patti Boyd, who had been the inspiration for Layla. He recorded the album 461 Ocean Blvd in the spring of 1974. The disc would go to number 1 on the Billboard charts after its release, as would the single from the disc, I Shot The Sheriff. EC went on the road in support of the album in June 1974, his first tour since 1970. Throughout this tour, Clapton would often sound a bit sloshed, as a new demon had replaced his addiction to heroin, namely a growing dependency on alcohol. This soundboard recording captures EC during that comeback tour, in Boston on July 12, 1974, 45 years ago today.
