I saw the Allman Brothers for the first time on July 21, 1979, at Madison Square Garden in New York, the 3rd straight Saturday that month that I had been at a concert. The other 2 were Stephen Stills on July 7 and Jorma on July 14, with Blondie and Rockpile thrown in on Sunday, July 8 just for good measure. Such was life at the age of 20. Unfortunately, I didn't pick the best of years to see the Allmans. The group had just recently reformed, after splitting apart in 1976 due to drug issues, legal conflicts and numerous tensions between band members. While their recent album, Enlightened Rougues, released in February, was well received, with some great guitar work between Dickey Betts and new addition, Dan Toler, on songs such as Pegasus, Can't Take It With You and Crazy Love, the band was still in serious trouble. Their record label, Capricorn, collapsed later in the year due to financial issues, and Southern Rock simply was losing popularity amidst the punk and new wave revolution. By 1982, the band would again break up, and stay apart for another 7 years. Despite their troubles, the Allmans could still put on a great live show, and didn't disappoint that night in Madison Square Garden. While I never have been able to find a tape of that show, I do have this FM broadcast from 2 nights earlier, on July 19, 1979, 4 decades ago today. Special thanks to AZ Jones (you can find a link to his website in the sidebar) for supplying me with this one.

Great show, thanks for this! BTW, the addition on guitar was "Dangerous" Dan Toler.
I saw them in Springfield, MA and at some ski resort in the Berkshires during that summer. They had the Hell's Angels as their security. Still snuck in a bottle of Jack.
Thanks Speedy didn't have this one justdave
Thanks for this one, speedy!
I, too, saw them on this tour in a 3,000 seat theater. But I disagree about the timing;
'Enlightened Rogues' was a fine LP (certainly their best since 'Brothers and Sisters'), and the band turned in a great show that May evening.
Which is why I'm oh-so-eager to hear this.
This sounds fantastic. Thank you very much
You consistently give us great, hard-to-find classic shows by a wide range of artists. Yours is without doubt the best music blog around. Keep up the good work, it's very much appreciated!
Thanks for the kind words! Comments like yours are what keeps me going!
just discovered this show, sounds great Great show, Greg sounds half stoned, half hung over which considering when this show was was probably the case. in my opinion only adds to the slumbery blusey quality of his voice. Without a doubt with the possible exception of Joe Cocker RIP, the greatest white blues/ soul singer ever. In fact he and Joe would be 1 and 1A depending on who you prefer.. There is no music like this today perriod. How we have fallen in pop culture where we have gone from great stuff like this to the garbage of today. Was this King Bisquit or a simalier show?. know that live radio shows were popular back then . Thanks again and keep up the great efforts
Would love to have this but link is expired. Could you please post a new one? Thank you.
new link is up - enjoy
