On July 21, 1973, Jim Croce’s biggest hit, Bad Bad Leroy Brown, went to number 1 on the Billboard charts. When asked what had inspired him to write the song, Croce explained it was based on a guy he had met in the army. He was a tough guy who never had anyone tell him what to do. Croce’s army buddy went AWOL, but incredibly came back at the end of the month to try to collect his pay check. The military police put him in handcuffs and locked him up, putting an end to another tough guy, much the way Bad Bad Leroy Brown gets his comeuppance in the song. This FM broadcast captures Croce in Amsterdam on July 29, 1973, 46 years ago today and just about the time Bad Bad Leroy Brown had topped the charts. No one but no one could move you so emotionally as Jim could , Its impossible to listen to Operator, Lovers Cross, Time in a Bottle or I got a Name and keep from tearing up and sometimes crying like a baby.. Why but why did we have to lose him so soon. his songs to this day get me through tough times. also the many feel good songs, carwash blues/ Leroy Brown ecc could make you as happy as his ballads could make you sad. compare this music to what we have today and its even sadder. If only you and Maury hadnt gotten on that plane.Love and miss both you and Maury Jim thanks for helping to keep jims music alive speedy, heres hoping that many other shows will pop up as he toured quite a bit during his short time with us , your blog is the best
Speedy , im glad that so many people are commenting about Jim and his music.I consider him the James Dean of music, Like Dean who made 3 films all classics and then died in a car crash at 24. Jim had a simileur legacy 3 albums in two years all great,.downloaded some boots and the guy was just incredible on stage so funny with the stories of his life before music, from his army days to the time that he was driving 18 wheelers cross country and the diversity of his songs ranging from the happy / funny stories Leroy Brown, Carwash blues. Speedball Tucker ecc to the beautiful ballads Operator, Lovers Cross ecc. He was so talented and unique in that he had a way of connecting with people that was so rare, heard many people commenting that when he passed that they felt that they not only lost a great artist but a friend as well, thats the type of connection that people felt for Jim, although you never met him you felt as if you knew him all your life, Props should also be given to Maury who added so much to Jims music. There are guitarests today that can't match that beautiful interplay of accoustic sound that he and Jim had, two guitars on stage in perfect harmony . That sound was was theirs and no one has ever been able to duplicate it. Are there many other bootlegs availible Speedy? know that he and Maury toured nonstop for over two years but it seems that there arnt many recordings for some reason , thanks , your blog is the best

If possible, this seems to be a great selection of his songs, Glassboro is still active and that will be my first expereince with Jim Croce live. I remember his variety tv show and his name in those huge lights, and I was around 10. I even had the Time in a bottle album, still do, howz about that. Even caught a show and some suds at Croce's in LA many moons ago. Pretty amazing that his stuff still stands up. Best part, he just made it look so easy and it seemed like he was always on the radio, AM, and then FM too. He was like the reluctant star on that show, like he wouold rather be anywhere else till he had the guitar. He was an enigma to most and there cant be too many people out there that when one of his songs comes omn the radio, or, playlist today that gets all agro and yells turn that crapoff. Much more it would seem to be a universal sly smile slowly starts a creapin, like the possibility of enjoying a guilty pleasure.
KUDOS to you SmrB for all that you do, and especially in the case of bad bad leroy brown,even if he looks like a jigsaw puzzle with a couple of pieces gone.
