Elvis Costello - 1977-12-09 - Boston, MA (FM)

As mentioned in several posts on this blog, in December 1977, Elvis Costello was busy establishing his reputation as one of punk’s angry young men. For example, on December 17, he disrupted that week’s episode of Saturday Night Live by changing songs mid stream, halting Less Than Zero after just a few bars and launching into Radio Radio. The move earned him a lifetime ban from the show (later lifted in 1989). Just a little over a week prior to that incident, Costello played this show in Boston on December 9, 1977, 3 dozen years ago today, which is captured in this FM broadcast. About ½ way through the set, Costello plays a cover of The Roadette Song, which was originally done by Ian Dury & The Blockheads. Both Costello and Dury, who is best known for the tunes, Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick and Reasons To Be Cheerful, part 3, were among the numerous punk and new wave artists promoted by the independent label, Stiff Records. The Stiff roster also included Nick Lowe, Dave Edmunds Lene Lovich, Rachel Sweet, and Graham Parker, just to name a few.
