We’ve spent a host of posts here at So Many Roads describing the incredible run that Grateful Dead had in 1987 during Jerry Garcia’s remarkable recovery from a diabetic coma. We haven’t spent quite as much time on his solo projects that year, which is an oversight on our part. Garcia reconnected with his acoustic roots that year, playing over 2 dozen shows featuring both acoustic and electric sets. Those included a 2 week run at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on Broadway in October, followed by 3 nights at The Warfield in San Francisco in November and 2 nights at the Wiltern in Los Angeles in December. This soundboard recording captures the last night at the Wiltern on December 4, 1987, 26 years ago today. The acoustic set is filled with covers of old blues, folk and spiritual tunes, including an incredible version of Swing Low, Sweet Chariot. The electric set, in typical Graci fashion, demonstrates his unique ability to interpret tunes from a host of genres and artists, including versions of Dylan’s I Shall Be Released, Jimmy Cliff’s The Harder They Come and Van Morrison’s And It Stoned Me.
