1984: In October 1984, U2 released their 4th studio album, entitled The Unforgettable Fire. It would become a landmark disc for the band, as they overtly moved to change their musical style and direction. They separated from long-time producer Steve Lillywhite, and recruited in his place, Brian Eno. In place of the overt rockers from the War Album, were richer, more layer tunes, with lyrics that were more subtle, more open to interpretation. The disc received mixed reviews, as critics split over whether the U2’s change of direction was a success. The disc was without a doubt, however, a commercial success, reaching #12 on the Billboard charts while climbing all the way to the top spot in the UK. In addition, U2’s tour in support of the album found the band playing larger, indoor arenas. Moreover, their performance at Live Aid on July 13, 1985, would transform them into international superstars. This soundboard recording captures U2 on November 21, 1984, 33 years ago today, near the start of the first European Leg of the tour that would propel them to stardom.
