Neil Young, Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp's joint decision to launch Farm Aid was inspired by the words on Bob Dylan, While on stage in Philadelphia to close the American portion of Live Aid on July 13, 1985, Dylan commented that "I hope that some of the money that's raised for the people in Africa, maybe they could just take a little bit of it, maybe … one or two million … to pay the mortgages on some of the farms."  While Live Aid organizer Bob Geldorf wasn't happy with Dylan, calling the remarks crass, stupid, and nationalistic," Neil, Willie and John decided that Dylan was right and they needed to do something to address the poor conditions facing America's family farmers.  The first Farm Aid benefit show took place less than 2 months later, on September 22, 1985. Dylan's set, backed by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, was one of the highlights of that inaugural show.  Bob returned the next year, again backed by Petty, for the 1986 Farm Aid concert on July 4 in Manor, TX

Today's post features Dylan during his 1993 North American tour which would encompass 31 concerts across 29 cities in 15 US states and 2 Canadian provinces. Dylan toured with Santana, and the two alternated opening and closing the show. This soundboard captures Dylan’s set on September 8, 1993, 23 years ago today, in Vienna, VA. On this night, Santana opened for Dylan.
