As the Summer Of Love dawned in 1967, Buffalo Springfield, much like The Byrds, were hardly a harmonious outfit.  While the band's tune For What Its Worth, which clearly embodied the younger generation vs the establishment mood of the time, had reached #7 on the Billboard charts early in 1967,  that commercial success couldn't halt the mounting tensions in the band.  Stephen Stills and Neil Young were at odds with each other, the start of a now half century on again, off again feud.  On The eve of the band's appearance at Monterrey Pop, Neil decided he had had enough of Stephen and left the group, temporarily.  David Crosby filled in for Neil at Monterrey, which of course, led to his eventual ouster from The Byrds.  Ironically, the trio would wind up working together just 2 years later, forming along with Graham Nash, one of rock's first super-groups. The Springfield split for good in 1968, or so it seemed.  Then 42 years later, at the 2010 Bridge School Benefit, the 3 surviving members of Buffalo Springfield  - Neil, Stephen and Richie Furay - took the stage together on October 23 and 24.   It was a rock & roll miracle! After those 2 historic reunion shows. the Springfield embarked on a brief 7 show tour in June 2011. The last show of the run was on June 11, 2011, 6 years ago today, at the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Manchester, TN. While The Springfield’s appearance was one of the highlights of the 2011 festival and seemed to symbolize that Neil, Stephen and Richie were back together for good, it may in reality have been a farewell performance. Despite rumors of a major East Coast tour to take place later in 2011, the Springfield did not go back out on the road. In fact, by early 2012, Neil was back working with Crazy Horse, and Stills had planned a tour with Crosby and Nash. Download this one (not sure if its a soundboard or HQ Audience tape), therefore, to hear have what just might turn out to be Buffalo Springfield’s final concert.
